Anonymous: Punjab & Kashmir isn't part of India, so there are 24 states and 5 ut's :)

Punjab and Kashmir is not a part of India? It’s either you or the Wikipedia that has gone wrong with the geography of India.

But anyways, if we talk of these two places, it comes down as follows:

PUNJAB

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Punjab_region says:

The Punjab, also spelled Panjab is a geographical region straddling the border between Pakistan and India which includesPunjab province in Pakistan and the states of the PunjabHaryanaHimachal PradeshChandigarh and some northern parts of the National Capital Territory of Delhi in India.

and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Punjab,_India says:

Punjab is a state in the northwest of the Republic of India, forming part of the larger Punjab region. The state is bordered by the Indian states of Himachal Pradesh to the east, Haryana to the south and southeast and Rajasthan to the southwest as well as the Pakistani province of Punjab to the west, it is also bounded to the north by Jammu and Kashmir. The state capital is Chandigarh. Major cities of Punjab includes LudhianaAmritsarPatiala,JalandharBathindaMohali, and Chandigarh. After the partition of India in 1947, the Punjab province of British India was divided between India and Pakistan. The Indian Punjab was divided in 1966 with the formation of the new states of Haryanaand Himachal Pradesh as well as the current state of Punjab. Punjab is the only state in India with a majority Sikh population.

So, i just hope you are not confusing the Punjab Region as a whole and the Indian part of Punjab.

KASHMIR

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kashmir says:

Kashmir is the northwestern region of the Indian subcontinent. Until the mid-19th century, the termKashmir geographically denoted only the valley between the Great Himalayas and the Pir Panjal mountain range. Today Kashmir denotes a larger area that includes the Indian-administered state of Jammu and Kashmir (the Kashmir valley, Jammu and Ladakh), the Pakistani-administered Gilgit–Baltistan and the Azad Kashmir provinces, and the Chinese-administered regions of Aksai Chin and Trans-Karakoram Tract.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kashmir_conflict says:

The Kashmir conflict  is a territorial dispute between India and Pakistanover the Kashmir region, the northwestern most region of South Asia.

India claims the entire state of Jammu and Kashmir and as of 2010, administers approximately 43% of the region, including most of Jammu, the Kashmir Valley, Ladakh, and the Siachen Glacier. India’s claims are contested by Pakistan, which controls approximately 37% of Kashmir, namely Azad Kashmir and the northern areas of Gilgit and Baltistan.

India has officially stated that it believes that Kashmir is an integral part of India, though the Prime Minister of India,Manmohan Singh, stated after the 2010 Kashmir Unrest that his government is willing to grant autonomy within the purview of Indian constitution to Kashmir if there is consensus on this issue. Pakistan says that Kashmir is a disputed territory whose final status must be determined by the people of Kashmir.

So I believe that there are problems happening in Kashmir, regarding it’s ownership between the two countries, but still, A part of it belongs to India on paper.

The link says that there are 28 states and & 7 UTs. I wonder, even if we just take out the these two states out of the list doesn’t the count turn out to be 26 states and 7 UTs? :p

And just one last thing, I relied on Wikipedia for the info above. I mean, blindly. It’s a pretty reliable source according to me, I just hope you’ll agree with me on that.

Anything else you want to know about, would be very happily answered by us.
